Oxy Softball Sweeps First-Place Pomona

CLAREMONTAlexis Funaki led the Occidental softball team to a pair of road wins over first-place Pomona-Pitzer on Friday. Oxy edged the Sagehens 4-2 in Game 1 and routed them in Game 2, 14-3. 

From the Coach: "They were great team wins," Oxy head coach Ali Haehnel said. "Our pitchers were tough under pressure and our hitters made great adjustments all day. I'm really proud of our team's resilience and grit today."

On a Roll: After an impressive road sweep at Redlands last weekend, Oxy has won four consecutive games on the road.

Game 1: Occidental 4, Pomona-Pitzer 2

Funaki, Oxy's best all-around player, went 1 for 2 with two runs scored and a solo home run in the top of the fourth inning, along with getting the win in the circle. The junior from Encinitas pitched the first 5.1 innings, giving up just two earned runs.

Olivia Thayer, who pitched a complete-game victory over Redlands in her last outing, came on for the final 1.2 innings to earn the save, giving up no runs and just two hits.

Kira Elliott was also big in the win, going 1 for 3 with a triple, a run scored, and a pair of RBIs in the second inning. Madison Romero went 1 for 3 with a run scored, Mackensie Priley was 1 for 3 with a run scored, and Natalie Glover was 1 for 2 with a walk and an RBI.

Liz Rodarte and Izzy Deatherage each had a pair of hits for Pomona. Rodarte was charged with the loss as the Sagehens' starter.

Alondra Reynoso was solid in relief for the Sagehens with three scoreless innings and just one hit against her.

Oxy scored three runs in the second, one in the fourth and never looked back, hanging on for win win. The Sagehens scored two runs in the sixth to make things interesting.

Game 2: Occidental 14, Pomona-Pitzer 3

Funaki led the way again in Game 2 as the Tigers ran away from the Sagehens with ease. She started Oxy on the right foot with a single for three RBIs in the first inning, finishing the day 2 for 3 with two runs scored and four RBIs. 

Elliott went 2 for 3 with three runs scored and an RBI, Glover was 1 for 2 with two runs scored and two walks, Bailey Stevens went 1 for 3, Romero scored two runs, Cassie Carter was 1 for 3 with a run scored, Cora Roberts was 1 for 4 with an RBI, Priley scored a run and had two RBIs, and Nyla Gatison was 2 for 4 with a run scored and two RBIs. 

The game's result was decided quickly as the Tigers got up 9-2 by the third inning. Oxy added one run in the fifth and had a four-run sixth the blow the lead open even further. 

Thayer was great in the circle for the third game in a row, pitching 4.1 innings of relief without an earned run, three hits and one walk.

Reynoso was charge with the loss for the Sagehens. 

Haulted Game From Feb. 24: Pomona-Pitzer 12, Occidental 5

The Tigers and Saghens completed their haulted extra-inning game from Feb. 24. The Sagehens came out hot and went on to win 12-5 with a big 10th inning. 

The game was paused due to darkness earlier in the season.

Season Impact: The Tigers' record goes to 11-16-1 overall and 6-12 in SCIAC play. 

Pomona goes to 24-8 and 15-5.

Next Game: Oxy is back in action against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps at home in a doubleheader on Saturday. Game 1 begins at noon.
