Swimming Struggles against Sagehens on Senior Day

LOS ANGELES, Calif. (Feb. 9, 2008) – Both the men’s and women’s Occidental College swimming and diving were defeated by Pomona-Pitzer today at Taylor Pool. The men dropped a close 127-113 meet, while the women were handed a 147-89 loss at home.

For the men Dickson Fai and Mike Wong were victorious in both individual races they swam. Fai, a senior from Hong Kong, finished his four-year career in Taylor pool by claiming top honors in the 100 backstroke and the 200 freestyle in times of 52.84 and 1:47.06, respectively. Wong edged out Erik Petersen by .7 seconds in the 200 IM with a time of 2:06.03 and blew past all of his opponents in the 500 freestyle, finishing in 5:05.56 with his closest competition hitting the wall in 5:11.47.

Also turning in a first place performance today for the Tiger men’s squad was Jeven Dovey who swam the 100 breaststroke in 1:02.98.

Jack Hans, Dovey, Toshi Baker and Sean Inoue combined to place first in the opening event of the meet, the 200 medley relay. The men clocked in at 1:43.94, which was more than seven seconds ahead of Pomona-Pitzer’s top team.

Despite entering the meet with points from the Oxy divers, who dove uncontested by PP, the women’s team was unable to earn enough points during the swimming portion of the meet for a win today.

Celeste Faber again swept the one (246.98) and three (210.53) meter events. The only other first place finish on the day came from Eileen McMillan who defeated PP’s Erin Shea by six tenths of a second in the 100 freestyle with a time of 56.43.

The teams drop to 4-3 (men) 3-4 (women) in Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action after the final dual-meet of the season.

The Tigers will continue tapering until the SCIAC Championships on Feb. 21-23, 2008 at the Cerritos Aquatics Center in Cerritos, Calif. Diving preliminaries will take place on Saturday, Feb. 16 at 9:00 a.m. The Championships will begin with qualifying races at 11:00 a.m. and finals the same night beginning at 6:00 p.m.
