Tiger Swimmer and Divers Fall to Sagehens

CLAREMONT, Calif. (Jan. 10, 2009) – For the second straight day Occidental College swimmers and divers jumped into the pool for a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference competition. Today against Pomona-Pitzer men and women were both swept by the Sagehens, falling by scores of 143-94 and 146-89, respectively.

For the men the results were disappointing as a number of races ended with Sagehen swimmers out-touching the Tigers. Another disadvantage for Oxy off the top was that there are no male Tiger divers this year, putting them at an early 16 point deficit.

In individual events Matt Harter won the 100 butterfly in a time of 55.35, Michael Wong won the 500 free in a time of 5:06.84 and Jeven Dovey won the 100 breaststroke in a time of 1:03.04.

On the women’s side, Celeste Faber won both the one meter (232.90) and three meter (236.05) diving events while teammate Kyle Owens placed second on the one meter board.

Another individual event winner today for the Tiger women was Eliza Callwood who claimed victories in both the 50 free (25.40) and 100 free (1:05.00).

The 400 free relay team of Calwood, Karie Nickle, Mallory Ryan and Eileen McMillan finished first in a time of 3:50.17.

Many of the women had an opportunity to swim events that were not their usual events and had some fun doing it.

Both men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams will be back in action on Friday, Jan. 16 when the Tigers host the Caltech Beavers at Taylor Pool beginning at 4:00 p.m. Diving will take place at 2:30 p.m. at the Rose Bowl Aquatics Center.
