Tigers Swim Past Beavers


LOS ANGELES, Calif. (Jan. 16, 2009) – The Occidental College men’s swim team defeated Caltech 148­-76 today in a dual meet held at Taylor Pool with diving events taking place at the Rose Bowl Aquatics Center.

The Tiger men opened the meet up with a victory in the 200 Medley Relay behind performance by Zachary Condon, Jeven Dovey, Adam Kantor and Matt Harter who combined to finish in 1:45.50.

All four men went on to win individual events as well. Condon was the top finisher in the 200 IM in 2:09.64 followed by Dovey in 2:11.04 who also won the 200 breaststroke in 2:22.54. Kantor was the victor in the 100 free with a time of 50.45 while Harter won the 200 butterfly in 2:09.68.

Harter also led off the winning 200 free relay team, that finished first in 1:36.50, with Ross Miner, Derek Monroe and Austen Oliver.

Oliver was the 200 free winner with a finish in 1:57.31. Monroe hit the wall second in the event, 2:02.47, after taking 1.26  seconds off his time. Miner won the 50 free (23.48) and was second in the 100 free (52.21).

Among the other showing significant improvements were Michael Wong who took an astonishing 11.86 seconds off his 1650 time of 17:58.95. William Carlson showed to improved swims. He finished the 500 free second in a time of 5:33.74, which was 6.07 seconds ahead of his previous best before taking 3.59 seconds off his 200 breaststroke time, finishing third (2:33.60) just behind teammate Abiel Garcia (2:33.05) to complete a 1-2-3- sweep in the event.

Occidental swimmers and divers will be back in the pool tomorrow morning when they host the University of Redlands. Diving is slated to begin at 10:30 a.m. at the Rose Bowl Aquatics Center before the swimming events commence at Taylor pool beginning at noon.
