Diving Into SCIAC Finals


EL MONTE, Calif. (Feb. 8, 2009) – On back-to-back days the Occidental College divers took to the boards at the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Diving Preliminaries hosted at the El Monte Aquatics Center on Saturday and Sunday.

The Tigers, who have been produced a number of SCIAC diving champions over the last few years, again got top performances from senior Celeste Faber and sophomore Marisa Pulcrano who earned the 1-2 seeds on both the 1-meter and 3-meter boards.

On Saturday 11 divers competed in the 3-meter event, performing a set of 11 dives. Faber finished with 359.10 points while Pulcrano scored 314.45 marking the only two divers to surpass the 300-point mark.

Sunday the duo was joined by 17 other divers, including Oxy sophomore Kyle Owens. Again Faber and Pulcrano earned the top two spots, again representing the only two divers to score over 300 points. Another 11-dive meet saw Faber with 367.45 points as Pulcrano posted 315.95. Owens finished 12th among the 19 diver field with a 146.45.

The top eight finishers on each board will travel to the Belmont Plaza Pool in Long Beach, Calif. to compete at the SCIAC Championships on Thursday and Friday, Feb. 12-13.
