Swimmers to Participate in Hour of Power

LOS ANGELES, Calif. (Nov. 4, 2008) – Occidental swimmers will carry on a tradition, which began on campus last season, when they jump in the pool on Thursday, Nov. 6 at 5:00 p.m. joining numerous Division III schools across the nation. Team members will participate in the “Hour of Power” at Taylor Pool and encourage you to come out to support them in an effort to show unity and support for raising cancer awareness through a swim-a-thon.
The “Hour-of-Power” came into being a year after the sudden death of Carleton College’s swim team captain, Ted Mullin. He was diagnosed with synovial cell sarcoma, a rare form of soft tissue cancer that attacks muscles, joints and connective tissues. It occurs most frequently in young adults, age 15-29. This cancer is significant to athletes in that it focuses on their age group and the important strength components of their bodies.
Tiger swimmers swam last year for this cause and it left a lasting memory for many.
“I felt that this was one of the most important events we did as a team last year,” said senior captain Erin Brinton. “It was a true test to the teamwork and commitment that comes when all of us come together for a cause we truly believe in. The hour started off slow but then people got really into it and I have never enjoyed an hour of straight swimming so much in my life. People were cheering, running from lane to lane to help and keep every relay on track, and we even had some spectators who came out to watch us. It was by far a highlight to the season last year.”
Everyone is encouraged to stop by, even if just for a few minutes, to show your support not only of our swimmers, but of cancer awareness.
It is estimated that more than 5,000 swimmers will participate in the event this year, 1,900 more than swam a year ago. Occidental will be one of 88 teams, 75 colleges, to swim. Three additional SCIAC teams will be joining forces including Whittier College, Claremont-Mudd-Scripps and the University of Redlands.
The swim program will be accepting contributions to support the ongoing search for a cure.More info can be obtained at http://go.carleton.edu/HourofPower.
