Head Men's & Women's Swimming Coach / Director of Aquatics kuhn@oxy.edu 323 259 2703 |

Coach Kuhn arrives to Occidental with high expectations, a positive attitude, and a vision that results in being a NCAA Top-Ten squad. “I am excited to be the head coach of the Occidental Swimming & Diving Family. We will continue to build upon those family values and add a training program that is exciting, unique, and produces great results at the biggest meets.”
With over a decade of coaching experience, Coach Kuhn has been successful at every level. As camp director and senior level consultant for Fluid Mechanics, Kuhn worked with many national-caliber swimmers in the areas of psychology, stroke technique, in-water training, and strength training. “I learned that you have to continue raising the bar in stroke technique while focusing on every detail. These two lessons have greatly influenced my coaching.”
Coach Kuhn jumped right into the collegiate level upon graduating with honors from Washington College (MD). During his three years at Grinnell College, the men’s and women’s teams captured the Midwest Conference Championship every year. Many of the team’s records and conference champions were recruited during his time. “We had a great run there, and I had the chance, through trial and error, to work on my recruiting philosophy.” During his three years, he also earned is Masters in Business Administration (MBA) from the University of Iowa. “One of the main reasons I was attracted to Occidental was its top-flight academics. I believe in the value of a liberal arts education and believe Occidental is one of the best places to further your learning.
After Grinnell, Coach Kuhn jumped to the east coast to take the reins of the Sweet Briar College Swimming program. Starting with only six swimmers, Coach Kuhn turned the program into one of the conferences best. In his first year, the team grew to eighteen swimmers and finished 3rd in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference. The team increased their point total by more than 300 points, and Coach Kuhn was named the 2008 ODAC Conference Coach of the Year. He was also named the ODAC Conference Swimming Chair in his second year as a result of the respect he earned from his coaching peers. “The coaching staff and team set high expectations and we followed it with a strong work ethic.”
As Coach Kuhn brings his coaching success and experience to Occidental, he couldn’t be happier to be here. “I believe in Occidental’s academic mission and our team’s vision. I look forward to being at Oxy for many years to come.”

Sean Warlick | |
Assistant Men's & Women's Swim Coach |
||
Occidental welcomes Coach Warlick for his first-year as an assistant coach for the Swimming & Diving program. Coach Warlick is no stranger to success as both a swimmer and coach. A 2008 graduate of Grinnell College (IA), he was an essential member in helping the men’s squad achieve four Midwest Conference Championships. Named team captain his senior year, Warlick sacrificed his specialty to ensure the team’s success. Warlick’s team-first attitude and strong work-ethic have helped him become a successful coach at Golden West Swim Club.
“Coach Warlick and I have two things in
common,” says Head Coach Alex Kuhn.
“One, we have high expectations for the program, and two, we
have the same core coaching values. His coaching
experience at Golden West only helps to ensure our team has the
most up-to-date training.”
