Tigers Travel North for Cal-Nevada Championships

FRESNO, Calif. (March 29, 2008) – A handful of Tigers made the trip to Fresno for the Cal-Nevada State Championships. When the day was done, four Tigers qualified for the finals of their respective events and sophomore Grace Peck set a new school record in the 3000m steeplechase.
In only her second ever 3000m steeplechase race, Peck improved her best time by an impressive 19 seconds to 11:16.42, which is also a mere three seconds off a provisional qualifying time for the NCAA DIII National Championships. However, perhaps the most impressive thing about Peck's performance was that she ran almost the entire race with only one shoe. After only 200m another athlete stepped on the back of her right spike, taking it off her foot.
Fellow sophomore Denali Halsey also had a good weekend. In her first race back after recovering from mono Halsey moved into the Top 6 ranked athletes in the SCIAC in the 5000m with a solid 18:58.89 performance. Sophomore Libby Mislan continued her impressive recent form in the 400m where she clocked in at 59.94. For two consecutive weeks Mislan has dipped under the 60 second barrier.
For the Oxy men’s squad, senior Wills Mitchell produced his furthest javelin throw in two years, launching the spear out to a collegiate best of 167'06". Another senior thrower in good form was Chris Kyles who continued his recent habit of producing at least one life time best performance each week. After making finals on Friday afternoon, Kyles produced a fine series of throws on Saturday recording a new PR of 151'0". Sophomore Sam Huie has also been having a phenomenal season in the horizontal jumps. Huie produced the best three jumps of his life in the long jump to make finals with a best mark of 22'2.75".
On the track, junior Clay Hoadley ran an impressive 800m, crossing the line in 1:57.85, setting a new seasonal best and a time that ranks him third among all SCIAC athletes thus far in 2008.
