Steben Honored as Track & Field Assistant Coach of the Year

New Orleans, LA (Aug. 14, 2008) – For nearly three decades Andy Steben has been coaching student-athletes in field events for Occidental College’s track and field program. At the end of the 2008 season he was honored as the USTFCCCA Western Region Women’s Assistant Coach of the Year for Outdoor track and field.
Four Tigers were named All-SCIAC in 2008, including SCIAC Champion pole vaulter Kera Bartlett who advanced to the NCAA Division III National Championships for the second consecutive year.
During his tenure he has produced numerous standout performers including College record holder Gunnar Miller '94 (17' 4.75") and 2001 NCAA All-American and 2002 NCAA qualifier Marisa Omori '03.
Prior to coaching the Tigers, Steben was a student at Occidental from 1966-69. He competed in three NCAA Championship meets, vaulted in three AAU Championships, won the national NAIA title in each of his three tries, and set a school record (his 16'8" is still second on the all-time list) before vaulting in the Olympic Trials.
A tradition of success is sure to continue with Steben at the helm of the field events for Oxy track and field.
