Tigers Stand Out at Rossi Relays

CLAREMONT, Calif. (Feb. 28, 2009) – This weekend Occidental track and field teams traveled back to Claremont, this time to compete at the Rossi Relays hosted by Claremont-Mudd-Scripps where they met up with many other Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference schools as well as NCAA Division II and I institutions and some NAIA competition. Both the men's and women's teams improved on their performances from the Pomona-Pitzer Invitational and produced some individual life time best performances.
Two of the many highlights of the meet on the women's side were a pair of relay carries by sophomore sensation Season Falker-Rodriguez. Falker-Rodriguez continued her phenomenal start to the season (she PR-ed by over three seconds last week in the 400m) by producing 400m splits of 60.8 and 60.1 on the distance medley relay and 4 x 400m relay, respectively. Her 60.1 split was a 0.7 second improvement on her performance from the PP Invite 4 x 400m team.
Claire Larson, a first year athlete, also produced a brace of fine relay performances. She ran the 800m leg on the DMR in a great early season time of 2:19.9 before running a 60.9 leg on the 4 x 400m relay. Fellow freshman Meghan Whalen and junior Grace Peck combined with Falker-Rodriguez and Larson on the Tiger's DMR team. Whalen got the team off to a solid start with a 3:55 split on her 1200m leg and Peck brought the team home with a 5:30 1600m split. Their finishing time of 12:46.99 was five seconds faster than the women's DMR time from the same meet last year.
The Tigers also had a successful afternoon in the field events. Senior Kera Bartlett improved her season best in the pole vault to 11'6" and fellow senior Patty Armentrout improved her best vault performance of the spring to 9'6".
In the throws both sophomore Elise Burger and junior Lisa Warren produced seasonal best performances. Burger, in particular, had a great day producing PRs in the shot, discus, and hammer.
On the men's side, the Tiger's relay splits were every bit as impressive as the women's performances. Oxy had two DMR teams finish among the top five teams.
Senior Clay Hoadley and junior Victor Kali led off their respective teams with solid 3:10 and 3:13 1200m splits. They passed the baton to sophomore Mike Fox and first year Thomas Cahuzac. Both Fox and Cahuzac produced the best 400m splits of their collegiate careers; Fox recording a split of 50.3 and Cahuzac blazed his leg in 51.3. First year Will Mosely and junior Jon Wheeler handled the 800m legs splitting impressive early season times of 2:01.2 and 1:59.9, respectively. Finally, senior Keith Blumenfeld and first year Eric Kleinsasser anchored the teams home with 4:32 and 4:35 1600m legs respectively. Kleinsasser's leg, though far slower than his personal best, was particularly impressive since he had been battling illness for the previous five days.
The Oxy men's 4 by 100m relay team were also in fine form at the meet. The team of senior Joe Hernandez, sophomore Matt Tsujimura, junior Dorian Vaughn, and Fox improved their seasonal best to 43.61.
Another Tiger who improved his seasonal best was sophomore Deryck Lim who ran 16.25 in the 100mH, which was a huge improvement on where he was this time last year.
In the field, first year Juan German again looked impressive in the hammer. In only his second collegiate competition German recorded a mark of 134'10" (an improvement of 17' from last week). Fellow first year Ethan Spiro had a fine day in the jumps as he started his day by equaling his PR in the high jump with a 5'10" clearance. He then opened his collegiate account in the triple jump with a 42'7.5" leap.
