Tigers Get First Taste of SCIAC Competition

CLAREMONT, CALIF. (April 4, 2009) – On Saturday the Occidental College men’s and women’s Track & Field teams traveled to Whittier College where all eight Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference teams met for the SCIAC Multi-Duals as a tune-up for SCIAC Championships, which will be hosted by Oxy on Saturday, April 25 and Monday, April 27.

While both the men's and women's teams performed uncharacteristically, placing sixth on both sides, a number of Tiger's produced some promising individual performances to show that they should be amongst those chasing 2009 SCIAC titles.

For the men’s team, the highlight of the meet came in the 4x100m relay. The team of senior Joe Hernandez, sophomore Matt Tsujimura, sophomore Mike Fox, and junior Dorian Vaughn dropped their seasonal best time by four tenths of a second to 43.11 (the second fastest time in the SCIAC this year) and won the race. The key to their performance was their slick hand-offs which paid dividends on the last exchange where rival Claremont-Mudd-Scripps had a bad pass, ultimately losing valuable ground to the Tigers.

After running a great third leg of that relay, Fox went on to add a lifetime best in the 200m, dropping his time to 22.69, three tenths of a second faster than his previous best time. This time also allowed him to climb the SCIAC ladder to sixth this season.

Another 4x100m relay team member who had a good afternoon in his individual event was Hernandez who ran his fastest 100m (11.14) of the year to finish fourth amongst all SCIAC athletes.

Not to be outdone by their short relay team mates, the men’s 4x400m relay team also produced their best performance of the year. The team of first year Thomas Cahuzac, Fox, junior Jon Wheeler, and first year Will Moseley ran 3:21.40. Their splits were 51.2, 50.4, 50.4, and 49.2 respectively. Although the team placed fourth, the race was so close (3 teams were within 0.37 seconds of each other) that the Tigers will go into the Championship meet with a great chance of finishing higher.

Moseley ran a strong tactical race in his individual event, the 800m, to finish second overall with a time of 1:57.80, which was considerably slower than his best of the year, but his strong finish bodes well for the conference final.

One of the Tigers’ mid-distance runners who showed to be in good form was senior Clay Hoadley who passed four competitors in the final 200m of the 1500m race to crossed the line in fourth place. His time of 4:05.54 was a new life time best time. With a solid finish, Hoadley should be among the favorites in two weeks time at the SCIAC Championships.

In the field events, junior Sam Huie produced a pair of seasonal best marks in the long jump and triple jump with marks of 21’8” and 45’7”, respectively, which were good for third place in each event.

On the women’s side, senior Kera Bartlett, freshman Sadie Mohler and Claire Larson each won their respective events. Bartlett easily cleared 11’6” in the pole vault to claim a victory, Mohler ran a life time best of 11:56.23 (an improvement of 18 seconds) in the steeplechase for her win and Larson powered away from the field in the 800m to win in 2:19.35.

Fellow first year, Anna Dalton overcame being boxed in on the first lap to finish three places behind Larson, overall in fourth place. Another freshman. Meghan Whalen is also a mid-distance runner who looks good at the right time of the season as she reduced her life time best in the 1500m by two seconds to 4:53.29, placing fifth.

Despite battling illness for the past two weeks and being unable to train at 100%, sophomore Season Falker-Rodriguez continued to improve as she has done all season long. She produced another life time best in the 200m (27.06), also helping the 4x400m team earn a third place finish. The team of senior Sarah Fischer, Dalton, Falker-Rodriguez and Larson produced their best time of the year finishing in 4:06.95, just under a second away from second place.

In the field events, senior Patty Armentrout produced a pair of seasonal best marks in the pole vault and long jump. She cleared 10’ even, vaulting and in the long jump she added five inches to her previous best mark of the season, landing at 15’7”.
