Womens Hoops Top Century Mark, Dominate on the Court

PASADENA, Calif. (Nov. 17, 2007) – The Occidental College women’s basketball team dominated things from the get-go en route to a 112-26 trouncing of the Pacific Union Pioneers tonight during the final game of the Caltech-Occidental Tip-Off Classic.
Fourteen of 15 Tigers scored with five players reaching double figures in the win. Freshman Stephanie Babij led the way with 17. Next in line was sophomore Gillian Nugent who tallied 11 while Brianne Brown, Brittany Mally and Jennifer Wilhelm recorded 10 apiece. Sophomores Samantha Rossi and Natalie Kolodinski added nine and eight respectively. Freshman Zoe Walsh and Caitlin Morgan each scored six points, adding a steal, in her first Tigers’ appearance.
Brown stole the ball six times and Jessica Cross pulled down a game high nine rebounds including seven offensive boards. Babij also tallied seven offensive boards and finished with eight total.
Asha Jordan chipped in with six points and Laura Mohler added five points, three steals and two assists. Madeline Rose finished with three points and three rebounds.
Brittinee Yasukochi dished out eight assists and grabbed seven rebounds while Stacie Roshon finished with seven assists, seven points and five steals.
Oxy never trailed, jumping out to a 13-2 lead. They posted 56 points in each half and shot 50 percent from the field overall, taking 98 total shots. They pulled down 53 rebounds, 28 on the offensive side of the court. Twenty-eight points came on second chances and Oxy scored 62 points off turnovers.
Pacific Union’s best player, Karli Mathews, fouled out with five minutes to play in the first half. Another key player, Nichole Stottlemyer, went down late in the first half with an injury, but returned to the court in the second half. She finished with a team leading 12 points and seven rebounds.
Roshon was named the tournament MVP after totaling 28 points, nine rebounds, nine assists and seven assists. Yasukochi was also named to the tournament team with 11 assists, eight rebounds, four steals and seven points (shooting 50% from the field).
Occidental improves to 2-0 on the season. The Tigers will be back in action with their season home opener on Monday, Nov. 26 when they host Chapman University at 7:30 p.m. in Rush Gymnasium.
