Brown Repeats as SCIAC Player of the Year as Trio of Tigers Earn All-SCIAC


LOS ANGELES, Calif. (March 3, 2009) – For the second consecutive year Brianne Brown caught the eyes of the coaches from the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference as she was named the 2009 Player of the Year today. Joining Brown with First Team All-SCIAC honors are the sophomore duo of Dior Williams and Stephanie Babij.

Brown scored a team high 15.4 points per game with 11 blocks, adding 5.0 rebounds per game. She shot 49.7% from the field overall, hitting 27-for-65 three-pointers (41.5%). Brown also tallied 41 steals and 27 assists during SCIAC play this year.

Williams returned to the court for the first time since 2007, after being sidelined by an injury all of last year, and was in fine form all season. She le the conference in steals with 4.4 steals per game (61 total). Williams is one of the most athletic women in the conference who averaged 11.9 points per game while dishing out 40 assists and pulling down 3.5 rebounds per game. In 2007 she was named to the Second Team All-SCIAC.

Again, sophomore, Babij stood out in the conference this year as one of the most consistent players in the league repeating as a First Team award winner. Her 7.9 rebounds per game was second in the conference and first on the Tigers. She also averaged 10.5 points per game, with a field goal percentage of 57.9. Babij recorded 10 blocks, adding 17 assists and 12 steals to her season totals from 2009.

Occidental claimed their second straight SCIAC title, with a 12-2 record) and earned the right to represent the SCIAC in the NCAA Division III Postseason, which begins tomorrow at Chapman University. Oxy defeated Whittier and La Verne to improve to 22-5 entering the tournament.
