LOS ANGELES — Tala Ismail had a huge game as the Occidental women's basketball team beat Redlands 71-69 at the buzzer in a double-overtime thriller at Rush Gymnasium on Saturday.
With the game tied and the shot clock turned off, Oxy point guard Dru Ishibashi held the ball for the last shot. She drove right against the Redlands zone, forced the middle defender to help up and delivered a perfect bounce pass to Emily Leonard on the left block, who scored an uncontested layup as the buzzer sounded.
The Tigers rushed the court, celebrating their first conference win of the season. Oxy is 1-0 in SCIAC and improves to 4-1 overall.
Redlands falls to 2-3 and 0-1.
Ismail, a 6-foot sophomore from Pasadena who has become known for filling up a stat sheet, scored a game-high 27 points, grabbed 10 rebounds and had five steals, while shooting 9 for 14 from the field in 45 minutes played. She was 3 for 6 from beyond the 3-point line including one three during the first overtime period that cut a five-point Redlands lead to just two.
Oxy leading scorer Shariah Green had 10 points on 4 for 8 shooting and five points in just 29 minutes. She missed a good chunk of the game in foul trouble, including some time late in regulation and in the overtime periods with four fouls. During that run, Michaela Smith-Simmons gave the Tigers much-needed post defense on Redlands' best player Reyna Ta'amu, who finished with a team-high 12 points and 13 rebounds.
Alyssa Ramlochan finished with 11 points, four rebounds and five assists and Leonard added 10 points and four rebounds for Oxy.
First Overtime: Trailing 64-62 with 40 seconds to play, Ismail drove hard to the basket, looking for the game-tying basket, but was called for a charging foul.
Redlands had a chance to ice it with ball control and some free throws, but threw the in bounds pass away into the back court where Ismail tracked it down for a layup to tie the game.
Redlands missed its opportunity with 15.8 seconds left and Ishibashi's desperate runner from 19 feet missed off the backboard.
End of Regulation: Green had a decent look at the basket on the last play of regulation, but her contested bank shot from outside the block was off the mark.
