Black and Orange Pull Out Overtime Thriller at CMS

CLAREMONT, Calif. (Feb. 6, 2010) – The Tigers squeaked out a road victory by riding the double double performance of Stephanie Babij and surviving a great overall effort from CMS. After shooting so poorly in the first match up, CMS stepped up from the field and played great defense, but the Tigers made just enough plays to steal the 76-73 victory.

Tigers Leave No Doubt in Rematch against Whittier
WHITTIER, Calif. (Feb. 4, 2010) – After trailing at halftime in the first match up against Whittier, before falling to their only loss in SCIAC play, the black and orange had plans for a different ending. Oxy came in tonight playing at a different level and it showed right from the opening tipoff. Blazing out to a 39-20 lead by intermission, the Tigers were going to make sure they avenged the earlier loss, and then rolled to their eighth victory in a row by the final margin of 71-53.

Babij, earns second SCIAC Athlete of the Week honor
LOS ANGELES, Calif. (Feb. 3, 2010) – Announced today by the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference office, Occidental College women’s basketball player Stephanie Babij was named the Athlete of the Week for the time period of Jan. 25-31.

Black and Orange Extend Winning Streak to Seven with Win over Sagehens
LOS ANGELES, Calif. (Jan. 30, 2010) – Last time these two teams tangled, Pomona Pitzer walked into halftime with a 36-28 lead, and the Tigers had to claw their way to a road win. Tonight they were back in the friendly confines of Rush Gymnasium, and made sure their defense did not put them in the same position, as they surrendered only 14 first half points and cruised to a 72-44 victory.

30 Point Night by Babij was just enough to Knockoff Redlands in Nail Biter
REDLANDS, Calif. (Jan. 28, 2010) – Riding another stellar night by Stephanie Babij, the Tigers were able to hold off a late rally to stay in the hunt for their third consecutive regular season conference title. The host Bulldogs went into halftime up five and twenty minutes away from holding onto the top spot in the conference, but then a 16-0 run to start the half by the Tigers, fueled by 18 second half points by Babij, was too much for Redlands to overcome.

Tigers Move into First Place Tie with Win at La Verne
LA VERNE, Calif. (Jan. 23, 2010) - An 11-0 run late in the first half changed the entire complexion of this hard fought SCIAC match up, as Oxy seized control away from La Verne, and held on to pick up a huge conference road win. To that point the host Leopards had been able to match each Oxy score with one of their own, but after that run, it was the Tigers (5-1) who kept La Verne at bay for the rest of the game. Coupled with a loss by Redlands (5-1) at the hands of Cal Lutheran (5-1), all three teams now sit atop the conference with identical records.

Oxy Depth Sparks Victory over Caltech
LOS ANGELES, Calif. (Jan. 21, 2010) - After a methodical first half, the Tigers turned to their depth and overwhelmed the visiting Beavers, blowing the game open in the second half, en route to a 68-30 home conference victory. Caltech kept the deficit to single digits for most of the first half, going into halftime down 31-21, but a frenetic Tiger pace, aided by fresh legs, was too much for the visitors to handle as they could only muster nine points in the half as Oxy ran to a conference victory.

LOS ANGELES, Calif. (Jan. 18, 2009) – Announced today, Occidental College basketball players Stephanie Babij and Huston Conti swept the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Athlete of the Week honors for women’s and men’s basketball, respectively.

RIVERSIDE, Calif. (Jan. 18, 2010) – Oxy traveled to La Sierra tonight for their final non conference matchup of the season. The Tigers dominated both halves, as 12 of their 14 players scored, en route to a 71-42 decision.

Nugent nets 18 as Tigers hand Regals first SCIAC loss of 2010
THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. (Jan. 16, 2010) – The Tigers were down five points with 4:38 remaining in regulation when senior Gillian Nugent took the Black and Orange on her shoulders, scoring the next nine points, turning the deficit into an advantage before Oxy knocked down four more free-throws to seal a 72-69 victory as Occidental College handed California Lutheran University their first Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference loss of the season this evening at the Gilbert Arena.

Tigers Return to Winning Ways with Win over CMS
LOS ANGELES, Calif. (Jan. 14, 2010) – After a tough loss Saturday, the Tigers couldn’t wait to get back on the floor, and it showed as they sprinted out to a 26-10 lead tonight against CMS on their way to a home victory . The visiting Athenas did not go down without a fight, battling back to cut the deficit to within striking distance several times, but they could never overtake the lead and fell to their third straight conference loss.

Tigers fall to Whittier, 78-72
LOS ANGELES, Calif. (Jan. 9, 2010) – The visiting Poets came in and executed a great game plan in the opening half tonight, knocking the Tigers on its heels, while opening up a double digit lead. Oxy responded, and by late in the second half had a comfortable lead and control of the game, seemingly on their way to a conference victory. Whittier had other ideas, finishing on a 14-2 run, to stun the Tigers and escape with a huge victory on the road.

Babij paces pack past Pomona-Pitzer with double-double
CLAREMONT, Calif. (Jan. 7, 2009) – When the Tigers took the court for the first time in 2010, after a seven day span without a game, the women’s basketball team found itself down at the intermission. A solid 24-point, 11 rebound performance from junior Stephanie Babij was the difference as the Black and Orange rallied to erase an eight point deficit at the half en route to a 62-53 victory in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opener.
