Oberiano, Rocha in Top 15 at SCIAC # 1

BEAUMONT — Oxy star Kristin Oberiano finished sixth and first year Samantha Rocha was 15th for the Occidental women's golf team at SCIAC # 1 over the weekend.

The Tigers placed seventh as a group with a 682, struggling to overcome a slow start at the Legends Course at the Morongo Golf Club. Oxy improved 10 strokes from Day 1 to Day 2.

"I thought we played well overall as a team," Oxy head coach Will Morris said. "Our putting betrayed us a little and it will be the focus of our upcoming practices."

Oberiano, a senior from Guam who's a three-time All-SCIAC selection, shot back-to-back 79s for a 14-over 158 combined score.

"Kristin being in the top 6 even though she didn't have her A-game was really impressive," Morris said. "

Rocha, a rookie from Downey, had rounds of 86 and 81.

Katy Uchiyama posted a 177 and Allie Economou shot a 180, rounding out Oxy's scorers.

Shelby Hunt of Whittier was the low medalist, shooting 73 and 69, and the Poets took first with a team score of 624.

Next Round: The Tigers are back in action at the Cal Lutheran Invitational March 13-15.
