Tigers Blank Poets for 10-0 SCIAC win

LOS ANGELES, Calif. (Oct. 27, 2007) – Occidental women’s soccer clinched a Post Season Tournament berth with a 10-0 victory over the visiting Whittier College Poets today on the Lower Soccer Field.

The offensive explosion was led by Corrine Winkler who recorded a hat trick, scoring twice in the first half and once to start off the second half. On her second score of the contest she headed the ball by the Poets’ goalie.

Chelsey Brack also scored a pair, the second a wide open shot from 25 yards out that bent into the upper left corner of the net for the eighth goal of the game. Brack added an assist as well when  she passed the ball off to freshman Jesi Sasaki in the 79th minute.

Adding to the first half attack were the duo of Adrienne Spivak and Moe Kishisa who each scored on assists from one another. Spivak’s goal came in the 13th minute while Kishisa scored 12 minutes later.

With just over 20 minutes remaining in the game Elise Devereaux rebounded the ball, which hit the post on an attempt that brought the goalie out of position. Devereaux passed to an open Starlie Chinen who was all alone in front of the net for the sixth goal.

Freshman Lauren Swachenko scored her first collegiate goal on an assist from sophomore teammate Mia Zagaja to round out the scoring for the Tigers on the afternoon. Zagaja recovered the ball that hit off the cross bar and Swachenko finished off the play.

Both Tigers goalies played in the game, but neither recorded any blocks as Whittier took just one shot. Occidental took 32. Oxy also had 10 corker kick opportunities.

Occidental improves to 9-6, 8-3 in SCIAC while the Poets remain winless at 0-16, 0-11.

The Tigers finish their regular season SCIAC schedule on Monday when they host the Cal Lutheran Regals in a game rescheduled from last week when air quality caused all outdoor contests to be postponed. Kickoff will be at 4:00 p.m. on the Lower Soccer Field.
