Sasaki Named Player of the Year, All-SCIAC teams announced

LOS ANGELES, Calif. (Nov. 6, 2007) – Jesi Sasaki proved to the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference that she can play with the best of them as she capped off her rookie campaign by earning SCIAC Player of the Year recognition. Joining Sasaki on the All-SCIAC teams were Corrine Winkler, Melissa Warner, Elise Devereux and Marci Kang.

A very skilled forward, Sasaki led Oxy with seven goals and four assists in her first collegiate season. Sasaki has shown that she is very astute in her movement with and without the ball, has very good vision and awareness and demonstrates composure beyond her years in tight situations as well as in front of goal. She is quick, has a great change of pace and change of direction, takes defenders challenges and just gets on with playing the game she truly enjoys.

Winkler, a fellow freshman, was also recognized with First Team All-SCIAC honors. Playing nearly every minute of every game during her first season, she scored seven goals. Winkler reads the game well, has good technique, good decision making ability, is fierce in the tackle and is outstanding in the air.

Three Tigers landed on the All-SCIAC Second team. As a senior team captain and 2006 Second Team All-SCIAC, Warner started all but one game in front of the goal for Oxy in 2007. She allowed less than a goal a game against SCIAC opponents thanks to her physical strength, ball handling skills, comfort in the air under pressure and well developed technical and tactical skills.

Devereux, a 2006 First Team All-SCIAC selection, continued to contribute to the Tigers as a sophomore midfielder. She has a good first touch, crosses well with the right, is also adept with her left and is never afraid to take players on.With attacking skills and a very good understanding of the defensive responsibilities that go with the position, Devereux had a pair of goals and an assist this season.

Rounding out the Oxy All-SCIAC recipients is Marci Kang who earned Second Team honors for the first time. The sophomore defender has started every game, is vocal on the field and has become a very highly respected and hugely effective team leader. She reads the game exceptionally well, is tactically very astute, is very comfortable on the ball,  strong in the tackle and is a real competitor who always puts the team first.
