Winkler Hat Trick Leads Tigers to First Win of 2008

LOS ANGELES, Calif. (Sept. 17, 2008) – In the women’s soccer home opener and first Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game of the season, sophomore midfielder Corinne Winkler used both her foot and her head, twice, to score three of the Tigers goals in a 5-0 victory over Whittier College on the Lower Soccer Field this afternoon.
In the 21st minute of play she scored not only the first goal of the season, but the ultimate winning goal on an assist from freshman Alex McHenry. Forty minutes later she headed the ball past Whittier’s goalie off a corner kick by Elise Devereux. Finally, in the 79th minute she did the same on a corner kick off the foot of Moe Kishida for the final score of the game.
Devereux added a goal of her own in the 34th minute to put the Tigers up 2-0, a lead they took into the half.
Rounding out the Occidental offense was junior Carly Wachi who got an assist from Jesi Sasaki in the 66th minute.
Oxy took control of the game early and dominated throughout, taking 35 shots, while allowing just two. While the Whittier goalie, Lea Betsworth, allowed five goals, she made 17 saves.
The Tigers improve to 1-2, 1-0 in SCIAC play as the Poets fall to 0-4, 0-1 on the season.
Occidental will be back in action on Saturday at 11:00 a.m. when they host the University of La Verne Leopards in SCIAC contest number two of the young season.
