Tigers Come Up Short Against Leopards

LOS ANGELES, Calif. (Sept. 20, 2008) – A late offensive surge was just not quite enough for the Occidental College Tigers as they fell 3-2 to the University of La Verne in Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action today on the Lower Soccer Field.

ULV jumped out to a 1-0 lead at the mid-way mark on a goal from Ashley Cendejas. The Leos added another pair in the second half from Leopards leading scorer Falisha Ramirez and Ashley Vanga in the 58th and 64th minutes, respectively to take a 3-0 lead.

Oxy clawed their way back into the game late in the second half with back-to-back goals from the sophomore duo of Jesi Sasaki  and Corinne Winkler.

In the 83rd minute Sasaki went one-on-one past a defender to score her first goal of the season. Winkler, the Tigers leading scorer on the season, followed three minutes later with the final goal of the game on an assist from Lauren Sawchenko.

The Tigers fired off 18 shots to the Leos’ eight in the loss. Tatiana Gutierrez made four saves for ULV while Robin Feldman came away with three saves for the black and orange.

Oxy falls to 1-3 on the season, 1-1 in SCIAC while La Verne improves to 3-2, 2-0.

Occidental will be back on the field next Saturday, Sept. 27 when they travel to Pomona-Pitzer to take on the Sagehens at 11:00 a.m.
