Almost is not enough for Tigers

CLAREMONT, Calif. (Oct. 3, 2009) – For 87 minutes and 50 seconds the women’s soccer teams from Occidental College and No. 18 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps were scoreless. At that time, however, the Athenas used a penalty kick to their advantage, handing Oxy a bitter 1-0 loss in Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action on a gorgeous day on the road.

CMS took 20 shots and Oxy goalie Robin Feldman made nine saves, including a couple of spectacular blocks late in the game as the Athenas attempted to score on a series of corner kicks, to no avail. There was a scrum in front of the cage around the 85th minute in which CMS took at least three shots on the same play, of which the Oxy defense defended their goal, not allowing a score. Moments later the PK by Laura Hagen found its way past Feldman, who played all 90 minutes.

The Tigers’ Liz Martin took a team-high three shots in the game. Corinne Winkler, Lei Song, Jesi Sasaki, Marci Kang, Whitney Roline and Alex Nicholson also had opportunities today. The black and orange earned three corner kicks in the game.

Defensively Season Falkler-Rodriguez, Nicole Findlay and Kang all worked together to keep the Athenas out of Tiger territory.

On Wednesday, Oct. 7 Occidental (4-4, 2-3 SCIAC) will host Whittier College at 4:00 p.m. on the Lower Soccer Field. The Poets play at UC Santa Cruz on Sunday, but enter the game 0-4-1 in SCIAC play.
