Weekend shutout for Tigers Soccer
LOS ANGELES, Calif. (Sept. 13, 2009) – The Occidental College women’s soccer team followed a 4-0 victory by the men’s team on Saturday evening with a shutout of their own. The Tigers defeated the La Sierra University Golden Eagles 2-0 Sunday afternoon on the Lower Soccer Fields for their final preseason game.
Oxy held La Sierra to zero shots and zero corner kicks while racking up 36 total shots of their own. Despite the number of shots, however, the Golden Eagle defense and goalkeeper held the Tigers to merely two goals.
The Tigers maintained nearly the entire game on La Sierra’s half of the field and tirelessly attacked the opposing goal, scoring for the first time at the 13th minute. The goal came as senior Elise Devereux crossed the ball directly to freshman Whitney Roline who headered it past the goalie and into the net.
Throughout the first half, the majority of Oxy’s attacks materialized due to the strenuous effort by sophomore Liz Martin as she prevented many attacks by the La Sierra offense and returned the ball herself for three shots and countless passes to the Oxy forwards.
In the second half, freshmen Rebecca Verstraete and Alex Nicholson replaced Leina’ala Song and Jesi Sasaki as forwards and added six more shots of their own before the second goal at the 82nd minute: a beautiful through ball by Verstraete to the lunging Grace Reinhalter whose shot left the goalie and the rest of the Golden Eagles’ team hopeless.
Once again, senior Marci Kang and junior Corrine Winkler revealed their tenacity and strength in the mid-field combing for six shots and effectively stifling the La Sierra attack.
The Tigers travel to the University of La Verne on Wednesday, Sept. 16 to meet the Leopards in their conference opener. Teams will take the field at 4:00 p.m. at Ben Hines field.
