About the Program
Occidental’s
women’s soccer team competes at the NCAA Division III level
in the very competitive Southern California Intercollegiate
Athletic Conference (SCIAC). The 2006 season saw a significant
change in personnel with as many as seven freshmen starting in many
of the conference games. By season’s end, Oxy had the
second-best overall defensive record among SCIAC teams but
goal-scoring proved to be a problem. This young squad was a match
for every conference rival but could not find the net often enough.
They gained tremendous experience in the past season and will be
very competitive again in 2007 and there is no doubt they possess
the ability to have a serious crack at the top
four.
In its relatively short history Occidental women’s soccer had produced a number of Western Region All-American’s, an All-SCIAC MVP plus numerous First & Second Team All-Conference Selections. Elise Devereux and Melissa Warner were All-Conference selections this past season, the second in a row for Melissa. Sarah Haywood was honored with the SCIAC Senior Women’s Award.
Along with playing tough conference rivals, Occidental competes against Regionally and Nationally ranked opponents from the NCAA & NAIA such as US Santa Cruz and Chapman University. UC Santa Cruz was the first regionally ranked team to play on our recently installed Fieldturf facility at Patterson Field when they visited in 2005. Most of our games are played on our 70 x 110 yards natural grass field.
Occidental College is a phenomenal school with a faculty and academic program second to none. We are located in one of the most dynamic cities in America yet we have the feel of a small college. Our students compete with the best of the best in the classroom and our women’s soccer team is primed and ready to compete with the best in our region.
