Hasegawa Leads Women's Tennis
LOS ANGELES, Calif. (May 2, 2007) - There aren't many who embody the ideal of the Occidental student-athlete better than Kelly Hasegawa '07.
Hasegawa, a native of Hilo, Hawaii, is a four-time All-SCIAC
selection, the third in the history of Occidental women's tennis
(Kristin Carter, 1984-87, Maro Najarian, 1989-92) and the
28th in Oxy athletics all-time.
An economics major with a minor in Japanese language and
literature, she is also an Academic All-American nominee and a
senior Scholar-Athlete candidate. The last Occidental
Scholar Athlete to earn four First Team All-SCIAC selections was
Finn Rebassoo '03.
Hasegawa compiled a 7-2 record in SCIAC match play this season, highlighted by a grueling 4-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-8) victory over Yassie Entekhabi of Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, the #2 ranked player in the Western Region, April 6 at Flint Canyon Tennis Club.
Hasegawa has recorded more than 50 victories in both singles and doubles in her career. Occidental women's tennis won the sportsmanship award in 2006.
Hasegawa defeated Megan Ehlers of Concordia-Irvine 7-5, 6-3 at the Ojai West Region Championships April 27-28 and overcame a first set setback to defeat Jessica Nagasako of CMS in round two. She lost in the round of 16 to Desiree Stone of Division II UC-Davis 6-4, 6-0.
"It has been an honor to coach Kelly this season," says first-year head coach Linda Park. " She's a leader, a hard worker, and a great player who respects her opponents."
