Womens Tennis Sweeps on Opening Day

LOS ANGELES, Calif. (Feb. 14, 2009) – For the first time of the 2009 season the women’s tennis team took to the courts. Occidental returned from the Burbank Tennis Center with a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference victory after defeating Caltech 9-0.
Four Tigers donned black and orange for the first time, each picking up a win in singles play with each of the four also winning in doubles action.
The doubles team of Kisa Ito and freshman Frances Hutton swept their Beaver opponents 8-0 while the other two teams won 8-1.
In singles action both Hutton (at the no. 5 spot) and Katrina Gould who was playing in the #3 slot were victorious 6-0, 6-0 over their respective opponents.
Kris Subbia defeated Caltech’s Leslie Tong 6-2, 6-0 and Briana Cartwright defeated Lili Yang 6-3, 6-1, respectively in the number one and two spots.
Ito outplayed Gloria Tran, winning 6-1, 6-0 and Isabelle Ying rounded out the field today for the Tigers with a 6-0, 6-1 victory.
Next up for Occidental will be another SCIAC
match on Friday, Feb. 20 at the University of Redlands where the
Bulldogs and Tigers will begin play at 2:00 p.m.
