Tigers Split Weekend Matches

RIVERSIDE, Calif. (Mar. 1, 2009) – The Occidental women's tennis team was busy once again this weekend, as they traveled to Whittier College Saturday morning and then to UC Riverside on Sunday morning.  The Poets could not contend with the Tigers, as Oxy won 8-1 to even its conference mark at 2-2.  Riverside on the other hand swept the Tigers 7-0, handing them a valuable lesson in the shutout loss.

At Whittier College, Oxy dominated every facet of the match, winning by an overall mark of 24-8 in the doubles competition.  Highlighted by back to back 8-1 wins for Rachel Washtien / Frances Hutton and Katrina Gould / Isabelle Ying.  The Poets did take one match in the singles dual, but Oxy played well again, posting three wins by the scores of 6-0, 6-1 by Briana Cartwright, Gould, and Hutton.

Sunday proved a much tougher task, as the Highlanders made the most of every break opportunity, not allowing Oxy to gain any momentum.  Breaking the Tigers early and often, while sitting on the second serve to do most of their damage.  Riverside cruised to 7-0 victory, but Oxy’s Gould did battle to a 4-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-2) loss.  The only Tiger to threaten the division one program in the event.

Next up for Occidental (2-4, 2-2 in SCIAC play) is a non conference dual match with Hardin Simmons at home on Friday March 6th, with first serve scheduled for 2:30pm.
