Oxy Uses Depth to Defeat the Warriors
SANTA BARBARA, CALIF. (Mar. 10, 2009) – The Tigers were looking to find some magic on the road, as they had played host to a couple tough spring break matches, and found just what they were looking for. Using a total team effort today as they knocked off the host Westmont College Warriors.
Westmont came out and dominated the opener in doubles, cruising to an 8-2 victory. But the doubles teams of Marissa Cassman / Taylor Kaplan responded with an 8-1 drubbing of the number two doubles team. Not to be outdone, Frances Hutton / Katrina Gould put on an even better show, pulling off four consecutive breaks, to win 8-0.
The Warriors responded with two straight wins to open the singles portion of the dual match, tying the match at 3-3. But then the Tigers overall depth was put on display in this victory, as Oxy reeled off four straight victories to take the match and snap the losing streak.
Cassman got things started with a 6-3, 6-1 win, but the momentum swing came from Kaplan, who bounced back from a 4-6 loss in her opening set to win going away 6-2, 6-1. With the Tigers in complete control of the match, Gould put the exclamation point on the win with a 6-0, 6-0 win. Hutton picked up the sixth win of the day with a 6-0, 6-2 victory.
Oxy (3-7) can enjoy this win for awhile, as they do not take the courts again until March 18th. At that time they will face Sewanee at home, first serve is at 3pm.
