Oxy Falls in Tiger Showdown

LOS ANGELES, CALIF. (Mar. 18, 2009) – After a long layoff, Oxy was back on the courts, and faced a formidable non conference opponent in the form of the #20 ranked Sewanee Tigers. Oxy has played a tough schedule this season, and continue to make strides towards joining that elite class, but today they were overmatched in an 8-1 loss.
The visiting Tigers took command early with three straight wins in the doubles portion of the dual match. Kris Subbiah / Jennifer Wahba had a chance to knock off the top doubles team, as they were tied 4-4 early on, but a late break gave Sewanee just the space they needed for an 8-5 win.
Subbiah took the confidence from the near upset and took the number one singles players from Sewanee to three sets. Shocking her by taking the opener 6-2, before falling in the final two. Marissa Cassman, after a disappointing loss in an earlier doubles match, regained her form and battled back at number two to win in three sets. After getting broken twice in the opener to lose 6-2, the Oxy junior would not even allow her opponent another chance at a break, cruising to a 6-4, 6-2 win.
That would be the only win of the day, as the #20 ranked Sewanee squad easily won the rest of the singles matches, improving to 9-1 against division three opponents and 9-3 overall.
Oxy (3-8) will have a couple days to regroup, before facing Lewis and Clark at home this Sunday, March 22nd, at 3:30pm.
