Oxy Prevails Despite Tough Conditions

LOS ANGELES, CALIF. (Mar. 22, 2009) – The Tigers were back in action today against the visiting Pioneers from Lewis & Clark. With the threat of a downpour looming, Oxy began play and although the wind and cold worsened, the Tigers were not effected as they posted a 6-3 victory.
The Pioneers cruised to an opening set win before the Tigers responded with back to back doubles victories by Marissa Cassman / Taylor Kaplan and Frances Hutton / Rachel Washtien. Outscoring their opposition by a combined score of 16-6.
Lewis and Clark would strike back, sweeping the top two Oxy singles players, and regaining a 3-2 lead in the match. That would not be enough, as they proved earlier in the season, the Tigers had enough depth to compete at every position. Today it was enough to win in the final four matches, as Oxy responded with four consecutive sweeps, to secure the 6-3 win.
Kaplan scored a convincing 6-1, 6-0 win while Katrina Gould was almost as impressive with a 6-1, 6-1 victory. The Tigers closed out the final four singles matches with a combined game score of 48-14.
Oxy (4-8) will have a couple days to regroup, before facing Pacific Lutheran, at home this Tuesday, March 24th, at 2:30pm.
