Occidental Defeats La Verne on the Courts

GLENDALE, Calif. (April 4, 2009) – Less than 24 hours after defeating Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference rival Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, the Tigers picked up another league victory with a 9-0 win over the University of La Verne at Scholl Canyon today.
In a close No. 1 doubles match Krishnaveni Subbiah and Jennifer Wahba turned in a 9-8 (7) victory to complete a Tigers’ 1-2-3 doubles sweep. Taylor Kaplan and Marissa Cassman won 8-5 at No. 2 doubles while Frances Hutton and Stephanie Babij cruised to an 8-0 victory in the No. 3 slot.
Again Subbiah battled at the top spot, winning the only match of the day that went to three sets. She dropped the first game 4-6 before clawing her way back, tying the set at 1-1 with a 6-0 victory. She finished things off winning 1-0 (5) to seal the victory at No. 1.
Jennifer Wahba and Taylor Kaplan won at the No. 2 and No. 4 spots, respectively, 6-0, 6-3 and 6-2, 6-0.
Marissa Cassman, whose six-match win streak ended yesterday, bounced back and was in fine form today, winning 6-3, 6-3.
Rounding out the field were freshmen No. 5 Katrina Gould and No. 6 Frances Hutton, who each picked up her fifth consecutive singles win. Both players cruised to victories, Gould winning 6-0, 6-1 and Hutton turning in a 6-1, 6-0 performance.
The Tigers even their overall record at 8-8 while improving to 4-2 in SCIAC play with one match remaining in dual action before the conference championships.
Oxy will be back on the courts next Saturday, April 11, when
they travel to Thousand Oaks to take on the Cal Lutheran Regals who
currently hold an 11-6 overall record and also sit at 4-2 in SCIAC
play. First serves are scheduled for 9:30 a.m.
