Cal Lu Knocks Off Tigers in Conference Opener
LOS ANGELES, Calif. (Jan. 30, 2010) - Oxy is coming off a third place finish in the SCIAC, a year ago, and opened the 2010 season and conference by hosting the Cal Lu Regals. The Regals tied for third last season, as well, but got the best of the Tigers today. Dominating the doubles portion of the dual match and held off the Tigers in singles to pick up the victory.
Cal Lu took the first two doubles matches without much trouble, before Frances Hutton and Rachel Washtien lost a tough match at the third position, losing 9-8 in a tiebreaker (7-4).
Singles was a different story, as Marissa Cassman rallied after losing 6-2 in the opening set to take the second set 6-2, before falling in a one game third set 10-8. Katrina Gould followed by also dropping her first set 6-2, but then rolled to a 6-1 second set win, and surviving in the third 7-5 to take the match and get Oxy on the board.
Cal Lu swept the fourth and fifth singles matches before Isabelle Ying cruised to a 6-3, 6-3 straight sets win to finish the day but it wasn't enough at the Tigers fell to the Regals by a final score of 7-2.
Next up the Tigers travel to UC Riverside to take on the division one Highlanders, on Saturday, February 6th with first serve at 11:00am.
