LOS ANGELES — Krishnaveni Subbiah (Beaverton, Ore.) beat the No. 15 ranked player in the West in No. 1 singles, but the Occidental College women's tennis team lost its first SCIAC match of the season to No. 26 Redlands 8-1 at Scholl Canyon on Friday, ending its three-match winning streak.
Subbiah defeated Jessica Ly 6-4, 6-1, improving to 5-4 in Oxy's top spot this season while making her own case for national recognition in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's next weekly poll.
The Tigers (5-5, 0-1 SCIAC) had defeated Mills, Kalamazoo and Pacific Lutheran during the win streak dating back to March 5.
Redlands (8-4, 1-0 SCIAC) was too tough. The Bulldogs swept the doubles and took every singles match besides Subbiah's win for a decisive victory.
Rachel Buckner and Subbiah lost for the first time this season as Oxy's No. 1 doubles team to Ly and Shannon Cassidy, falling to 9-1.
Oxy travels to Claremont on Saturday to face Pomona-Pitzer in its second of six consecutive SCIAC matches on Saturday. Doubles start at 10 a.m.
