LOS ANGELES — The Occidental College women's tennis team got some revenge against La Verne and closed out its 2012 season playing better than it had during the month of April, beating the Leopards 6-3 at the SCIAC Championships.
Oxy went 1-2 at the tourney hosted by Cal Lutheran, losing its first match to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps 5-0 and its last, to Whittier College 6-3.
The Tigers, which went on a four-match skid leading up to the tournament, finish the season 7-13 overall and 1-9 in SCIAC play.
In its regular season finale on April 21, Oxy lost to the Leopards 8-1.
But at the Matador Tennis Club in Northridge on Friday, Rachel Buckner (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y.) defeated Tarika Krishnamurthy at No. 2 singles 6-0, 6-1, and picked up another point for the Tigers as one half of Oxy's No. 1 doubles team, leading the Tigers to their first victory since they beat the Master's 8-1 on April 9.
Buckner and Krishnaveni Subbiah (Beaverton, Ore.) edged Laina Matsuda and Brook Hines as Oxy's top doubles team via the tiebreaker, 9-8, 10-8, finishing the year 11-6 overall as a tandem.
Buckner, Subbiah and Katrina Gould (Davis) each earned singles victories for Oxy's three points against the Poets in the team's season finale on Saturday.
