LOS ANGELESSara Charney (South Pasadena) fought off windy conditions to come back and pick up a victory at No. 3 singles despite dropping the first set and facing match point in the third-set tiebreaker.

But Charney's success was the only match Oxy was able to score in, losing 8-1 to No. 28 Bates at Scholl Canyon on Wednesday.

Charney defeated Lucy Brennan 2-6, 6-3, 12-10.

"Sara displayed lots of character again, just as she did against Westmont, and came out a winner once more," Occidental coach Jeff Normile said. "After dropping the first set in very windy conditions, Sara changed tactics and was able to take the second."

Charney defeated Westmont's Emily Keach 7-6 (7-5), 6-1 last week in Santa Barbara.

Oxy's second-best showing was Amber Gadsden (Yigo, Guam) and Catherine Anderson (Newtown Square, Pa.) at No. 2 doubles. The pair led 7-6 before falling to Jacqui Holmes and Brennan 8-3.

At No. 1 doubles, Ama Oparison (Bradenton, Fla.) and Keilani Ericksen (Waimanalo, Hawaii) fell to Elle Mandzhukova and Ashley Bunk, 9-7 in a close match.

Oxy's next match is March 3 against Ohio Northern.
