LOS ANGELES — Without a full starting line up due to injuries, the Occidental women's tennis team picked up an impressive win, edging Willamette 5-4 at Oxy on Sunday.
Oxy was without normal No. 2 singles starter Jane Wright and half of its No. 1 doubles team.
Nicole Pelletier bounced back from a quick first-set loss to win the match-clinching point by beating Sylvia Marr at No. 4 singles, 1-6, 7-6 (3), 6-0.
"Nicole started off playing her opponents' style of game, but eventually found her rhythm by using her heavy forehand and her grinding baseline style," Oxy head coach Rachel Manasse said. "She had a really close second set before wearing down her opponent and dominating the third set."
Farrell stepped onto the court and was able to dominate the doubles match with her low aggressive first serves and ability to close at the net.
"Samantha showed her versatility and ability to play with multiple doubles partners," Manasse said.
Andrea Clawson got a quick point on the board at No. 2 singles.
"Andrea showed her ability to rise to the occasion and really stepped up when we needed her in the No. 2 spot," Manasse said. "Her slice back hand played a factor in making her opponent uncomfortable."
Davis, who has been a volleyball player at Oxy but hasn't played competitive tennis in four years, nearly picked up a point at No. 6 singles in an exciting three-set match.
Season Impact: Oxy improves to 3-5 on the season.
Next Match: Oxy is back in action on Monday against Whitworth at 4 p.m.
