LOS ANGELES, Calif. (September 26, 2007) - After a 14-day home-match gap the Tigers returned to Rush Gymnasium with a bang as they held off the Golden Eagles from La Sierra for a 3-0 win in the non-conference match-up tonight.
A slow start quickly melted away as the Tigers easily took the first two games 30-20 and 30-19 respectively. The finale was a lot closer as Occidental saw themselves trailing midway through the game. Ashley Rosenbaum, a sophomore middle blocker, was on fire with seven kills in the final frame as she totaled a match high 11. Freshman Kathryn Bockmon contributed six kills while freshman Lehela Cleveland and senior Sonia Huizar (two games) tallied five apiece.
Huizar led all players with 11 digs and three service aces while sophomore setter Jaime Nikami accumulated17 assists.
For the Golden Eagles, Meagan Miller and Hallie Burishkin each finished with 10 digs.
Occidental improves to a 3-4 overall record. La Sierra falls to 2-9 on the season.
The Tigers are scheduled to host two matches this weekend beginning on Friday night at 7:30 when the Whittier College Poets come to town for Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action. Oxy will be home again on Saturday as the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Athenas take the court at Rush Gym for a 6:00 p.m. start.
