Tigers earn first win of season at Pacific Coast Classic

CLAREMONT, Calif. (Sept. 5, 2009) – On day one of the Pacific Coast Classic the Occidental College women’s volleyball team dropped the opening match of the season, 3-0 to Chapman University, before recovering to sweep past Fontbonne 3-0, earning a split on opening day. The Tigers returned to Claremont where they fell 3-1 and 3-2 in a pair of closer matches against UMass, Boston and Lewis & Clark, respectively.

In the her first Occidental appearance, Logan Boyer-Hayse led all players with 15 kills in the Tigers’ loss to Chapman (20-25, 11-25, 21-25). She hit at a .387 clip, adding a team-high 10 digs.

As Oxy picked up its first win of the 2009 season, Boyer-Hayse teamed with fellow freshman Kasey Rose to make an immediate impact at the collegiate level as each recorded 11 kills, to lead the Tigers. Classmate, Carin Montelongo tallied 14 digs to lead the team while junior Ginger Grimes finished with 29 assists. As a team they hit at a .323 clip as they cruised to 25-19, 25-16 and 25-15 victories.

Day two of the Pacific Coast Classic, proved to be more challenging for the Tigers who rallied to win the third set against UMass-Boston 26-24, but fell in four. Rose took the Tigers on her back, recording 18 kills in the contest, while junior Kathryn Bockmon also reached double figures with 10 kills.

In the final match of the weekend, the Tigers and Pioneers from Lewis & Clark needed five sets to determine a winning. Oxy cruised to an opening game win at 25-18, following that up with a 25-23 win in the second set to go up 2-0.  Unfortunately for the Tigers, L&C tied things up at 2-2 after winning 25-16 and 25-19. In the final set the Pioneers solidified their win with a 15-9 performance.

Occidental was again led by Boyer-Hayse who tallied 21 kills, the only Tiger in double digits. She added a team-high 17 digs, followed by Bockmon who finished with 15 while Grimes set the ball 44 times.

The Tigers return to the friendly confines of Rush Gymnasium on Tuesday, Sept. 8 when they host a double-header with Chapman University (4:00 p.m.) and La Sierra University (7:00 p.m.) as a precursor to the Tiger Fall Classic scheduled for Friday and Saturday, Sept. 11-12.
