LOS ANGELES, Calif. (Sept. 11, 2009) – For the third time in the young 2009 season Occidental College needed five sets to determine a winner on the court. Today the Menlo College Oaks rallied back from a 2-1 deficit created by the Tigers, who won the second and third sets 26-24, to send the black and orange home with a tough 3-2 loss.

Occidental fell behind early, but the momentum swung in their direction during the second set and continued into the third. The fourth game, however, was a tough 25-21 loss, sending the teams to a tiebreaker.

In the final game, despite some long rallies and competitive volleyball, as had been played all match, the Oaks outlasted the Tigers 15-10.

As she has done in every match of her young collegiate career, Logan Boyer-Hayse led all players with 18 kills, tying teammate Carin Montelongo with 22 digs apiece. Kasey Rose finished with 10 kills as the only other player in double figures for Oxy. Ginger Grimes finished with 39 assists. Another freshman, Elke Teichmann, was responsible for two of the team’s three aces.

The second set of the match was the most solid performance by the Tigers as they hit for a .256 clip, combined, with 13 kills and only two attacking errors.

Occidental used this match as a warm-up for the inaugural Tiger Fall Classic, which will be held in Rush Gymnasium Friday afternoon and Saturday.
