Tigers have Sagehens’ number


LOS ANGELES, Calif. (Oct. 21, 2009) – Coming off back-to-back wins at the Cal Lutheran University Invitational last weekend, the Occidental College women’s volleyball team used the momentum to swing back into conference play, taking down the second ranked Pomona-Pitzer Sagehens in an intense five-game battle at Rush Gymnasium on Tuesday evening.

Winning the first set 25-15 the Tigers and Sagehens then flip-flipped the next three matches sending the decision into a fifth set. After PP took game two 25-19, the Tigers returned to the top of the leader board with a 25-16 win, but the Sagehens rallied back to win game four 25-16. The final game was close throughout with the Tigers getting the better of the Sagehens 15-13, to ear a season sweep of Pomona-Pitzer who entered the night in second place in the standings with just two conference losses.

Leading all players was Logan Boyer-Hayse who tallied 24 kills, followed by Kasey Rose who notched 14. Both of the rookies recorded double-doubles adding a match high 39 and 20 digs, respectively. Clare Bolton was one kill away from double figures with nine for the Tigers while another Tigers freshman, Emily Repsher, led the way with 45 assists

Defensively Gwynne Davis recorded three solo blocks and four block assists as Oxy was credited with 10.0 total team blocks. Kathryn Bockmon finished with 35 digs.

The Sagehens (12-10, 6-3 SCIAC) were led by Sarah Amos with 22 kills and Heidi Leonard with 28 digs.

Occidental (11-13, 3-6) bumped PP down to a third place tie in the conference and moved up to sixth in the conference standings. Oxy will be back on the court this weekend for a pair of road matches. First they will face the Bulldogs at the University of Redlands in SCIAC action before heading over to La Sierra University for a non-conference night-cap.
