Tigers defeat Poets on the court

LOS ANGELES, Calif. (Oct. 27, 2009) – Tonight in Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference volleyball action the Occidental College Tigers defeated the Whittier College Poets three games to one to earn back-to-back wins.
After winning the first two games of the match 25-12 and 25-19, the Poets battled back to take the third set 25-22, but the Tigers came out with their claws ready in game four, winning 25-13 to put the match in the books. In the first game of the night Oxy hit at a .476 clip and they capped the night off by hitting .550 as a team.
Gwynne Davis and Logan Boyer-Hayse each racked up 10 kills to lead all players while Anna Kurnizki finished with eight. Megan Upp and Emily Repsher split the setting duties with 19 and 17, respectively.
Defensively Kathryn Bockmon led all players with 14 digs. Boyer-Hayse was one back with 13 and Kurnizki and Upp had 12 apiece. Davis also recorded four solo blocks and a block assist.
The Tigers improved to 14-14, 5-7 in SCIAC play and they have won six of their last seven matches. Occidental travels to Cal Lutheran University on Friday night, Oct. 30, to take on the Regals at 7:30 p.m. before retuning to Rush Gymnasium on Tuesday, Nov. 3 to conclude the 2009 season.
