Sweet sendoff for sole senior Tiger

LOS ANGELES, Calif. (Nov. 3, 2009) – For the past four years Ashley Rosenbaum has suited up wearing black and orange, competing in Rush Gymnasium. While her career began as a basketball player, the last three seasons she has become a defensive specialist on the volleyball team. Tonight in her final collegiate appearance the Occidental College Tigers put together one of their best performances of the season as they swept past the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Athenas 25-16, 25-19 and 25-21. The win pushed the Tigers into a tie with the Athenas for fifth place in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference final standings.

After cruising to victories in the first two games, the Tigers used a rally late to knot the final set at 21-21 and used a spectacular set of serves from Megan Upp to close out the game and match to end the season on a high note.

Freshman Kasey Rose completed her first collegiate season by leading all players with 13 kills as she recorded a career high six aces while adding six digs. Classmate Logan Boyer-Hayse also hit double figures, with 11 kills and Gwynne Davis finished with seven. Anna Kurnizki tallied 31 assists as the Tigers combined for 40 kills in the match.

Upp contributed defensively tonight as well with a match-high 13 digs while Kathryn Bockmon was one behind with 12. Rosenbaum, who entered the night with 42 block assists, added three more to finish her career with 75 block assists, 57 solo blocks and 154 kills. Tonight she hit at a .444 clip with four kills and no errors in nine chances.

The Tigers finished the season at .500 with a 15-15 record and a 6-8 SCIAC mark. Tonight also marked the Tigers’ seventh win in their last nine matches to round out 2009 on a high note.
