Occidental, Bethany win opening game of inaugural tournament

LOS ANGELES, Calif. (Sept. 11, 2009) – In the inaugural Tiger Fall Classic, Occidental walked away with a 3-0 victory over West Coast Baptist while Bethany University swept past Caltech to open the tournament.

After blowing out the Eagles 25-5 in the opening set, West Coast Baptist challenged, but to no avail as the Tigers went on to win 25-16 and 25-20. The Tigers got a solid performance from Lisa Fukuzato who notched seven kills to lead all players. She also tallied nine digs, along with freshman Logan Boyer-Hayse, who added five kills in limited action. Freshman Megan Upp recorded nine of the team’s 19 assists and Carin Montelongo had three aces. 

In the first game of the tournament, Bethany looked to Kim Feigles who had 10 kills and six aces in the win. Caltech was led by Katie Peters who recorded seven kills. Megan Jackson had four aces for the Beavers while Lisa Yee added three. Yee also finished with two solo blocks and seven digs.

On Saturday, Bethany and West Coast Baptist will take the court at 11:00 a.m. followed by Caltech and Occidental, who will be playing their Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opener at 1:30 p.m. Caltech will then take on West Coast Baptist before Oxy and Bethany round out the tournament.

All tournament teams will be announced following the completion of the final game.
