Tigers complete sweep, finish Fall Classic undefeated

LOS ANGELES, Calif. (Sept. 12, 2009) – On the final day of the inaugural Tiger Fall Classic, Occidental picked up another pair of victories to improve their overall record to .500 as well as opening Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action with a win.
Occidental earned a 3-0 victory over Caltech in the early afternoon before the Tigers defeated Bethany University 3-1 to cap off the weekend.
In the SCIAC opener, the Tigers’ freshman duo of Kasey Rose and Logan Boyer-Hayse combined for 22 kills as eight different players had at least one. Rose was the only played in double figures, with 13 and finished with a pair of aces. Ginger Grimes and freshman Megan Upp split time setting the ball and finished with 14 and 12, respectively. Boyer-Hayse also stepped up defensively with two solo blocks and six digs.
In the second Occidental match of the day, Boyer-Hayse notched 22 kills while Rose finished with 12 as each recorded a double-double adding 12 and 11 kills, respectively. Grimes tallied 38 assists and was responsible for one of the two aces in the match. Carin Montelongo, who had the other ace, dug the ball 17 times to lead the pack.
The Tigers defeated the Bruins 25-20, 25-22, 21-25 and 25-22 to claim the tournament title.
In other tournament action, West Coast Baptist rallied back to defeat Bethany University (18-25, 26-24, 14-25, 25-21, 15-9). Carmen Lopez led al player with 16 kills and Winnie Marks had a match-high 20 digs, adding three aces, in the win. For Bethany, Kim Feigles reached double figures with 12 kills and Calai Brown was a defensive threat with five solo blocks and two block assists.
WCBC also defeated Caltech in three sets, winning 25-19, 25-23 and 25-21. Marks again led all players with nine kills while Katie Peters paced the Beavers with six kills.
Occidental will continue SCIAC play on Saturday, Sept. 19 when they travel to Claremont, Calif. to play the Pomona-Pitzer Sagehens at 6:00 p.m.
