LOS ANGELES – The Occidental College volleyball team hit a cool .532 and made quick work of Mills College, 25-5, 25-14, 25-15, in the second game of the Saturday doubleheader at Rush Gymnasium.
Oxy (17-8) jumped out to an early lead and never let up.
Kasey Rose (Los Olivos) was perfect 7 for 7 in attack opportunities, Stephanie Gann (Tacoma, Wash.) served up four aces, and the Tigers did not commit a single attacking error in the first set to take the stanza, 25-5.
Rose finished with match-high 13 kills and no errors in 15 attempts (.867 hit percentage).
Second and third sets were a similar story, although the Cyclones' quick start in the third set seemed to put the sweep in doubt for the Tigers. The Cyclones took advantage of some sloppy plays from the Tigers and used Cecilia Orantes' three kills to take an early 8-2 lead.
However, Oxy quickly stamped out any hope of a comeback. After a quick timeout, the Tigers rattled off a 10-0 run during which Rose and Alyssa Mort (Tucson, Ariz.) combined for seven kills—all off Logan Boyer-Hayse (Boulder, Colo.) serves—to put the team up 13-10, and they never looked back.
It was an efficient night for the Tigers. 12 Tigers took the court, seven hit .400 or better and the team only committed five attacking errors the entire match.
The Tigers play one more non-conference match against West Coast Baptist on Tuesday at 7 p.m. before returning to conference action.
