LOS ANGELES — Taylor Gorretta continued her impressive rookie season with a team-high 16 kills, Amanda Herold had a great overall game with 12 kills, two blocks and nine digs and the Occidental women's volleyball team crawled out of a 2-0 hole to beat second-place Chapman 3-2 at Rush Gym on Tuesday.
In the deciding set, Gorretta had her two most impressive and powerful kills of the night to tie the set at 11-11 and 12-12. Then Herold put away a back-row kill and followed it up with a diving dig on a rally that Gorretta finished off, giving Oxy a 14-12 lead. Chapman scored the next point, but hit the ball into the net on match point, giving Oxy the victory.
"It felt amazing. I'm about to cry I'm so happy," Herold, a senior captain, said. "We worked super hard, It's an awesome win and we're excited about the rest of the season."
Lyndsey Johnson led Chapman with 15 kills.
Oxy took control of the momentum with a dramatic 30-28 win in the fourth set.
Game 1: Chapman 25, Occidental 21
The Tigers got off to a hot start, jumping out to a 12-3 lead when Gorretta finished an overpass for her fourth kill of the set.
Chapman went on a 5-0 run to get within striking distance before Oxy called timeout and then slowly chipped away at Oxy's lead. Trailing 18-14, the Panthers got a pair of blocks at the net that sparked an 11-3 run to close out the first set.
Gorretta finished the set with five kills and Wagner had three on .750 hitting. Allie Sundara had six assists and Degnan had three digs.
Johnson led the Panthers with four kills on .571 hitting.
Game 2: Chapman 25, Occidental 18
The Panthers maintained a 4-6 point lead for most of the set and then closed on a 4-1 run to take Game 2.
Degnan and Amanda Herold led Oxy with three kills each during the set. Strohm and Guidice each had two.
Oxy dropped from hitting .147 in the first set to just .088 in the second while Chapman jumped up from .161 to .267.
Game 3: Occidental 25, Chapman 19
The Tigers jumped out in front with some of their best volleyball of the night, going up by nine points three different times. The Tigers went up 18-9 on a bad set by the Panthers, 19-10 on a kill from Herold and 20-11 on a kill from Strohm.
Chapman then rallied off three points in a row, forcing Oxy to call a timeout, but the run was short lived as Oxy closed out the set with a six-point victory.
Oxy hit .289 during the set. Gorretta and Herold each had five kills.
Game 4: Occidental 30, Chapman 28
Oxy went up 11-9 on a kill from Gorretta, 13-11 on a block from Strohm and Guidice, and took its biggest lead at 17-13 on a block from Lara Minassians and Guidice.
Chapman got back to even at 21-21 and neither team held more than a one-point lead until Wagner put down a hard kill to go up 29-28 and finished the set with an ace.
Game 5: Occidental 15, Chapman 13
After falling behind 3-0, Oxy battled back to 6-6 on a kill from Guidice and a handful of Chapman errors.
Chapman was the first to eight on an attacking error by Wagner and then went up 9-7 on an ace from Kaitlyn Raymundo.
