LOS ANGELES — Sabrina Degnan was outstanding and the Occidental women's volleyball team got a handful of solid contributions from a number of players.
But the Tigers couldn't beat a talented La Verne team despite battling back to force five games, falling, 3-2 at Rush Gym on Wednesday.
Degnan, a senior from Atascadero, led Oxy with 16 kills and 11 digs.
Madelene Sellergren and Theresa Nevins came up huge in Game 4, helping Oxy push the Leopards to a fifth game. Nevins had four of her five kills and Sellergren had three of her five kills in the set. Their energy was a huge spark, but the flame went out in a quick fifth set.
Haley Celaya was very impressive for La Verne, finishing with a game-high 23 kills. Kelsie Sievers chipped in 14 kills, and Emma Estigoy and Katelyn Winiecki each had 13.
Game 1: Occidental 25, La Verne 21
Oxy went on a big run with Sabrina Degnan serving, pushing out to a 9-3 lead. Degnan had a pair of aces during the stretch.
La Verne battled back to tie the game at 13-13 and 20-20. Lauren Duffy came on strong at the end of the set, finishing two of Oxy's last five points off quick sets down the middle.
Degnan finished her fourth kill of the set on an overpass for the win.
Sundara was sharp on defense, diving for a handful of digs to keep rallies alive for Oxy.
Celaya had six kills in the set for La Verne.
Game 2: La Verne 25, Occidental 18
Degnan had six kills in the set, but it wasn't enough. The Tigers played from behind, tying the game at 12-12, but seven of the next nine points went to La Verne.
Celaya had four kills in the set for Oxy.
Game 3: La Verne 25, Occidental 16
La Verne ran away with Game 3.
Sellergren and Bethany Heitland saw time and made solid contributions for the Tigers.
Degnan continued her outstanding play with four kills in the set.
Game 4: Occidental 25, La Verne 22
Sellergren and Nevins were outstanding in the set, helping Oxy jump out to a 10-3 lead and hold off the Leopards.
La Verne slowly started to chip away at Oxy's lead and eventually tied the game 19-19. Nevins made a big play to find space in La Verne's back line for a standing kill and Sellergren had an ace, putting Oxy up 21-19 and forcing La Verne to call a timeout.
Nevins answered with another kill down the line and later her best attack ended the set as she crushed a shot down the line. She finished the set with four kills, including three of Oyx's last five points.
Sellergren had three kills in the set.
Game 5: La Verne 15, Occidental 8
La Verne was the first to eight points and made more plays, dominating the fifth set.
The Tigers committed five errors.
Season Impact: Oxy falls to 3-8 and 0-5 in SCIAC.
La Verne improves to 8-5 overall and 4-1 in SCIAC.
The Leopards have won six of their last seven matches.
