About the Program

During the 1970s and early '80s, Occidental Volleyball established itself as the most dominant small-college program on the West Coast. In fact, starting in 1970, the Tigers qualified for AIAW-sponsored national playoffs seven times. When Occidental realigned with the NCAA in 1981 as a Division III (non-scholarship) athletic program, the Tigers rolled to four consecutive post-season appearances, including an NCAA third place National finish in 1981. When the SCIAC (Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference) adopted volleyball as a conference sport in 1976, Oxy reeled off seven straight titles, while winning better than 80 percent of it's SCIAC matches.

Unfortunately, the Tigers labored through the balance of the 1980s, with the power shifting from school to school in the SCIAC.

As a new decade came to pass, so came the emergence of a new era for Tiger Volleyball. In 1992 Tiger Volleyball reclaimed the SCIAC title for the first time in nine years.

Although Tiger Volleyball was unable to call the SCIAC title its own in 2001, the team proved to the conference and the nation that they are title contenders. In their second to last game of the season, the Tigers beat SCIAC first place holder, Cal Lutheran in a 3-0 sweep.
