Tigers Among National Leaders
LOS ANGELES, Calif. (March 30, 2007) - This was supposed to
be a rebuilding year for the Occidental women's water polo
team. However, with a 10-11 overall record through the first
three weeks of the season (the highest win total of any SCIAC
school thus far), the Tigers have shown quick improvement and could
be a factor in the SCIAC title hunt.
With 49 goals in 21 contests, Danielle Montenegro '08 was ranked
ninth in scoring by the Collegiate Water Polo Association March
21. Rankings include players from all three NCAA
divisions. Montenegro, a native of Rowland Heights, Calif.,
has already surpassed last season's total of 47 goals scored.
Sara Boehler '09 ranks 24th with 38 goals followed by
Ashley Notti '09 (35) in 35th. Both have already
more than tripled their scoring output from last season.
Goalkeeper Laura Simanonok '09 ranks second in the nation with 209
saves - on pace to eclipse the school record of 307 set by Jackie
Provost '01 in Occidental's championship season of 2000...OXY SEASON STATS.
Oxy currently ranks sixth in the NCAA Division III top 10 poll. For a complete look at the national rankings visit the CWPA website: http://www.collegiatewaterpolo.org/html/0607News/32107womenpolls.htm
The Tigers begin SCIAC play Wednesday March 28th against seventh-ranked Whittier College (8-11, 1-0 SCIAC). Oxy prevailed 9-7 in its first meeting with Whittier earlier this season. The match is scheduled for a 5pm start at Taylor Pool.
