BAILEY-FINDLEY LEADS OXY AT ULV WITH SIX-GOAL EFFORT
LA VERNE — Tessa Bailey-Findley (Anaheim Hills) scored a game-high six goals — matching the entire La Verne team's total — and the Occidental College women's water polo squad moved one win shy of the program's record for wins in a season with a 15-6 road victory over the Leopards on Saturday.
Oxy, now 20-6 overall and 3-2 SCIAC, has three regular season games and the SCIAC postseason tournament to try to match and top the 2000 Tigers team that went 21-14 overall.
Bailey-Findley, who came into the game with 53 goals this season, put together one of the best performances of her career with two assists and six steals, to go along with her six scores.
Corrine Casey (Lodi) got Oxy on the board on its first possession of the game with a lob shot from the deep right side of the pool.
Nanea Fujiyama (Honolulu) scored Oxy's next goal a minute later, and then Bailey-Findley scored her first of the game on the subsequent possession giving the Tigers a 3-0 lead less than three minutes into the game.
The Leopards mounted a quick comeback with two unanswered goals. Bethie Ross, who led La Verne with three, scored on a 6-on-5 advantage, and Maddie Loverensky converted a penalty shot to make it 3-2.
But that's as close as the game would get.
The Tigers scored twice more before the quarter ended, and added two more in the second quarter, while holding ULV scoreless to take a 7-2 lead into halftime.
The Tigers punched in three more unanswered goals to start the third quarter before La Verne could get back on the board. The Leopards made it 10-3 with a goal at the 2:37 mark of the third quarter to end a 19 minute scoring drought.
The Tigers cruised in the fourth, adding five more goals for the easy victory.
Oxy returns to action tomorrow with a non-conference match against top-ranked NCAA Division I University of Hawaii. The game starts at 11 a.m. at Axelrod Pool at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps.
