LATE GOAL ELIMINATES OXY FROM CHAMPIONSHIP CONTENTIONBy Michael Wells Sports Information Director
WHITTIER — Oxy's Nanea Fujiyama (Honolulu) led the game with three goals, but fellow Hawaiian-Native Moana Tuilopotu (Lahainaluna, Hawaii) had the most important, and the Occidental College women's water polo team lost to Redlands 7-6 in the SCIAC postseason tournament semi finals at Whittier on Saturday.
Tuilopotu's goal came with just more than 3 minutes left in the fourth quarter, breaking a 6-6 tie and ending Oxy's hopes of repeating as SCIAC champs.
The Tigers will face Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Sunday at 1:30 p.m. in the third place game. Redlands advances to play Pomona-Pitzer in the championship at 3:15 p.m.
In two tournament games, the Tigers (23-8) struggled to get much going offensively, with the lack of goals finally burning them in their second game against the Bulldogs. One day earlier, Oxy squeeked out a 5-3 win over La Verne in the first round of the tournament. Tessa Bailey-Findley (Anaheim Hills) led the Tigers in that game with a pair of goals.
